Detective Gilbert Bass is back in the city and finds the body of a vagrant (smelling of whiskey) in an archaeological dig site.
Detective Bass’s case would have been easier to solve had it not been for the involvement of two land developers who just bought the plot from the city, and an activist who wanted the land kept as a park.
We also have the fashion editor Sally Finch, who lived next door with her estranged boyfriend; a brother sister duo, Alice and Alan from a bruised and dysfunctional family; and in the end, the man who always smelled of sausages.

Detective Bass is too kindhearted at times. He was about to conclude the murder case of an elderly veteran when he agreed to do a favor for a friend; after which, everything unraveled. They had already found the weapon, a 9mm pistol first issued during the Korean War, and he already had the suspect’s confession. Even the newspaper reported the story about the woman’s revenge on her father’s death.
A military historian at the university, who showed interest in that 9mm pistol, also had documents and photographs he wanted the detective to see. Oddly, this very same man’s neighbor was jailed for disturbing the peace and protesting the poisoning of pigeons.
Before Detective Bass could solve the case, he needed answers. What was the cover-up? Who was telling the lies? What was the truth?
